Why is My AC Freezing Up?

As the spring season arrives, so do warmer temperatures. When it gets really hot, people crank their air conditioning system into maximum overdrive. Unfortunately, there are instances when an AC unit freezes up.

The following are common ways that your air conditioning system can freeze:

  • Insufficient air flow. If your AC is not blowing inside air over the evaporator coil in the proper manner, then the condensate on the coil freezes over. In most cases, the problem is a dirty air filter.
  • Low refrigerant. When there is less Freon in your system, then the lower the pressure develops within the unit itself. Despite the low amount of Freon, your system continues to expand the same amount, resulting in cooler temperatures.
  • Mechanical failures. If there is a leak in your refrigerant line, a malfunctioning blower fan, or a blower fan that is dinged and out of place, these issues can change the pressure in your system and cause your AC unit to freeze up.
