The Most Common AC Issues

During the sweltering summer season, residential cooling systems are working at peak, continuous operation. Unfortunately, it is also the time of year when systems often break down or fail.

If you are not able to get cooling from your AC unit, it is imperative to first check the following basics:

  • Ensure that the electrical switch for your system is ON
  • Ensure all vents are open in your house
  • Ensure all windows in your home are closed
  • Ensure that the humidifier is OFF while the AC is running

If you’ve followed these steps but still experience issues with your system, the following are the most common problems that can occur:

  • Your AC isn’t running. If your system is turned ON, but it still won’t run, check to see if your thermostat is set to “cool,” and make sure that the setting is lower than the current temperature outdoors. Inspect your air filter to see if it is dirty, and then change it, if so.
  • Your AC isn’t cooling as well as it supposed to. Again, check your filter to see if it is dirty because a clean filter improves airflow throughout the house. If you have an outdoor unit, see if it is clear of any debris. If the problem persists, check to see if you are experiencing a refrigerant leak, which requires the services of a professional technician to repair.
  • Your AC is making loud noises. In some cases, all it takes it tightening a screw. In other cases, your blower motor might be failing or you have an electrical issue. If the latter is the case, contact a professional.
  • Increased energy bills. If your unit is more than a decade old, it can start to operate less efficiently and waste energy over time.
