What Type of Air Filter is Best for My A/C?

The air filter in your heater and air conditioner is one of the smallest, cheapest, and yet most important parts of the entire system. A dirty air filter can damage important components, prevent your system from working to its fullest extent, and cost you a lot of money in wasted electricity. Therefore, you’ll want to replace your filter frequently, but how do you know the replacement you’re choosing is the right one? Here are a few tips for choosing the proper air filter.

Types of Filters

There are several different types of air filters each with their own tendencies in terms of effectiveness, cost, features, and durability. Let’s look a little closer at each of them.

  • Fiberglass: The biggest benefit to these filters is that they’re budget-friendly. They’re readily-available and cost just a few bucks, but you pay for it in performance—these are also probably the least effective filters when it comes to removing airborne contaminants.
  • Pleated: These filters are also fairly inexpensive and constructed out of cotton or polyester fibers. Because the fibers are weaved closer together, they’re more effective than fiberglass filters, and the more pleats you can get in a filter, the better off you’ll be.
  • Electrostatic: Electrostatic filters use fibers that self-charge as air is passed over them to create a static field. This static field attracts dirt, dust, hair, pollen, and other contaminants, making them remarkably effective at removing them. These filters also do tend to cost a little more, but for those who suffer from poor air quality the cost difference may be worth it.
  • High-Efficiency: If you suffer from severe allergies or asthma, you’ll probably need a stronger and more rigorous air filter to truly remove triggering particles from the air in your home. A high-efficiency filter is your best bet in these cases. However, these filters are definitely not going to be found with the budget options, and your air conditioner itself needs to be able to handle the added resistance of a high-efficiency filter that allows less air to pass through.

Re-Useable Filters

Washable filters are becoming an increasingly popular choice for people who are looking to save money on operating expenses. Unlike other filters which are used for a few months and then thrown away, these filters can be removed, washed, cleaned, and then placed right back into your system again. That being said, while one of these filters can last you several years or more, they will eventually wear out. They also cost a lot more to purchase one time and do require the extra labor of washing it ever so often so you’ll need to carefully consider if it’s right for you.
