Does Your Home Have Proper Insulation?

In the perfect 70-degree year-round climate, insulation would be the least of your worries. You’d hardly even need an air conditioner! However, in Florida, those perfect 70-degree days are few and far between, meaning insulation in your home is an absolute must for all of those days in between. Learn more about how much insulation you need to keep your Palm Beach County home comfortable here:

What Does Insulation Do?

Insulation serves as a blanket for our home’s walls and slows the transfer of heat. Since heat always moves from a warmer source to a colder a one, insulation helps keep heat inside in cold climates and outside in warm climates. Insulation does more to keep your home cool than warm in Florida, but in either situation, insulation improves the efficiency of your home’s heating and cooling system and saves you money!

How Much Insulation Does Your Home Need?

In Florida, the more insulation, the better. As a general guideline, if the insulation in your attic does not come above the top of your floor joists, you need more. The U.S. Department of Energy has come up with a more specific form of measurement, using a scale of values, called r-values, to determine how much insulation is needed for homes in different parts of the country.

The higher your r-value, the longer it takes for heat to pass through your walls. In Florida, the r-value for attics ranges from 30 to 60. That’s a pretty large range, but it’s generally accepted to use an r-value of 38 for most homes. This translates to 12 inches of insulation. So, if you live in Florida, the insulation in your attic should be at least 12 inches thick. It’s also not uncommon to see 15 to 18 inches of insulation in some attics.

When it comes to your home’s exterior walls, it’s best to keep them completely filled with insulation. The insulation should extend from floor to ceiling, filling any gaps and wrapping tightly around wiring, electrical boxes, plumbing pipes and ductwork.

With proper insulation, your home will stay cooler when it’s hot out and warmer when it’s cold out. And - even better - it’ll save you money on your energy bills!
