Programmable thermostats have existed for decades, but only recently have
“smart” thermostats taken them to the next level, giving homeowners
many benefits and helping them save a bundle of money. Unlike a programmable
thermostat that can be told when to turn on and off and what temperature
to set at, a smart thermostat takes this a step further, giving you even
more precise control and even allowing you to use your smartphone, tablet,
or even your voice itself to adjust your system or turn it on and off.
If you’re interested in this upgrade, here’s a good place
to start. Here are three of the best smart thermostats available on the
market today in 2018.
Nest Thermostat E
Nest made waves back in 2011 when introduced their first smart thermostat
to the market. While it wasn’t the first thermostat that could be
controlled by an app, it was one of the first to offer the integration
options and learning capabilities that it possessed. Despite the high
price tag, consumers were flocking to stores and online retailers to pick
one up. Soon, competing companies around the world were trying to put
together a thermostat that could emulate the Next, and today it’s
later generation thermostats are still on the edge of the industry.
The Thermostat E finally solves arguably the largest problem of the first
model: the high price tag. The Thermostat E uses plastic parts as opposed
to metal and removes a few of the more in-depth features in exchange for
a much more palatable price tag for those looking to get in to the smart
home world. The Nest is both Google Home and Amazon Alexa compatible,
and can be found online and in stores for around $170, or roughly about
$80 less than the original Nest.
The Ecobee 4 is widely regarded as the next big “up-and-coming”
smart thermostat model. The small, attractive design looks at home in
nearly any décor setting, while the functions it sports are top-notch.
The user-interface is clean, intuitive, and friendly to even the least
technologically-savvy people, and yet the system is powerful enough to
help you improve your energy consumption with a wide range of features.
The Ecobee 4 is capable of utilizing remote sensors to get even more data
and better-control your home’s climate system, and it even links
to your Amazon Alexa smart home speaker, giving you the ability to control
your climate system with the sound of your voice. In fact, the Ecobee
4 even comes with its own small speaker already installed.
The Ecobee 4 is the most expensive of Ecobee’s smart thermostat line,
but also the most well-outfitted. If its $249 price tag seems a little
extreme, you can also pick up the Ecobee 3 or Ecobee 3 Lite which don’t
have quite the same arsenal of features, but still give you many of the
benefits for a lower cost.
Honeywell Lyric T5
Honeywell has long been a leader in the thermostat market, and today they’re
continuing to push the envelope, offering some of the best “bang
for your buck” models you can find. The Lyric T5 is one of these
models, offering a wide range of features, including Amazon Alexa connectivity
for an extremely low cost; as low as under $100 in some cases. While some
people feel as though the design is a bit clunky and dated-looking (it
quite a bit larger and more complex than either of the first two mentioned
on this list), it does have many of the same capabilities that its more
costly counterparts offer and for a much lower price. Honeywell is also
known for their wide range of compatibility, working with most models
from all major brands and manufacturers.
