Let’s be honest: nobody really likes having to replace their air
conditioner or heater. For starters, you’re without the use of these
appliances for the duration of the service (and longer if you wait until
your system breaks down to replace it), and then on top of it, the financial
investment is huge. But that being said, your investment should last you
for quite some time, providing you with cooled and heated air for years
to come. How long? Let’s take a closer look.
On average, you can expect your brand new air conditioner to last you between
10 and 15 years until it needs to be replaced. Furnaces get a little bit
longer of a life here in Florida, mostly due to our mild winters that
mean they are used much less, so you can expect yours to last anywhere
from 15 to 20 years. However, that being said your own furnace or air
conditioner could have a far shorter lifespan or a much longer one depending
on how you take care of it.
Preserving Your System
Increasing the longevity of your heater or air conditioner is not nearly
as difficult as it might seem, nor does it mean you have to run your system
less often (a paralyzing thought on the worst days of summer). For starters,
change your air filter. This small, simple screen is located over the
main air intake for your heater and air conditioner and is used to remove
dust, dirt, and other particles floating in the air. This prevents them
from being recirculated back through your home, but also prevents them
from damaging the important components in your system. Check it every
two to three months and change it at least twice per year.
Second, leave the fan set to the “auto” position. On this setting,
the blower motor will only fire up when your heating coils or cooling
compressor turn on, which will run the blower motor less often. This allows
it to remain in good working condition and use less energy. Likewise,
running the fan less often is also better for the motor, allowing it to
preserve its own longevity and help you avoid a costly repair.
Finally, have your systems tune-up regularly. Your heating and air systems
are a lot like a car: the more you take care of them, the longer they’ll
last and the better they’ll work. Letting a professional inspect
your system, fix any minor problems before they become serious, and clean
and lubricate critical components can help your heating and air systems
function properly for the next decade or more.
